Lot of emphasis has been given to sustainability today in Flexible Packaging Industry. For years we have
been using MLP for packaging needs. Since ages emphasis has been on barrier properties, OTR, WTR
values, shelf life and print quality. Did we take notice of Recyclability? No, we added heap and pile of
MPL scattered all over, even in oceans just choking the environment.
The inherent problem with MPL is that it is tough to recycle and not environment friendly. Most of the
structures have laminated films which cannot be recycled together, and it remains for years into
environment.
PET, Foil and Nylon based structures are non-recyclable in current recycling streams. Any permutation
and combination with these substrates make MLP non-recyclable and we are yet to do away with them
as they impart barrier, protection and machinability.
So we have been able to create Frankenstein which is now threatening Earth ……
